Was it just me or did April seemed to blink by? It might have to do with my impending milestone birthday (it rhymes with dirty) and also an increased workload for freelance writing (not complaining!). After traveling to Hawaii and Los Angeles, it felt good to be stationary this past month and continue to explore the Bay Area in full springtime bloom. Here’s what I got up to this past month…
I have mentioned before how much I’ve fallen in love with Oakland, and Lake Merritt is just one more place that makes me love this city so. My dad told me about these botanical gardens near the waterfront and being spring and all it seemed like a fitting activity with everything in bloom. If you need an outdoor oasis of calm in the city, this is the perfect place to escape to. Spoiler: there’s an impressive garden dedicated entirely to bonsai trees.
Alameda is one of my favorite East Bay islands, but I’ve never been to the Grand Marina before. At the end of the pier there’s a hidden cafe that serves delicious homemade pastries and sandwiches with a waterfront view. Well worth the hunt!
Mid-month we headed over to Dublin, CA (yes named after it’s Irish counterpart) to try delicious Afghan food and Chinese pastries for dessert that looked good, but were sadly nowhere near the level of these.
Later in the month, we made the trek over the Bay Bridge to visit my parents in SF. We walked around the windy, but always stunning Crissy Field to build up an appetite for Paxti Pizza, that is smack dab in the middle of one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city for guaranteed good food.
To top a very eventful month off, Mustafa and I went to Napa for an early b-day trip. Throughout this whole month it has slowly been settling in that my twenties are over and that I have a whole new decade to look forward to. A bit scary, but something definitely worthy of a weekend of celebration with wine, riverside bike rides and plenty of memorable meals.
Rose flavored Turkish delights covered in real rose petals from Turkey.
Finally finding a solid local sushi place here in Pleasant Hill.
The scent of honeysuckle greeting me the moment I step outside my door. Seriously, there is no better reminder of spring.
We are driving down to LA this week to celebrate both my looming giant of a birthday on Friday and my baby sister’s college graduation. Disneyland will definitely be part of the festivities and I cannot wait to show Mustafa my happy place since I was a little kid. We are having our wedding reception in early June, so this month will be a flurry of party planning activity (cue the deep breaths). I hope to balance it out with day trips to places like Marin and the South Bay.
What did you get up to this past month? What exciting things do you have planned for this month?
